I picked up a couple of books from the library on edible herbs and weeds. I managed to find a few edible plants growing next to the roads and sidewalks in our neighborhood, but I won’t be eating those. They spray that grass with fertilizer and pesticides. Mainly, I was just wanting to try my hand at identifying plants. I hope to find some areas where I can harvest weeds at some point, but right now, I just want to get the hang of identifying plants.

Plants I can identify:
Lamium amplexicaule or Henbit Deadnettle (these are everywhere!)
Dandelion (I need to try fried dandelion blossoms)

We also went fishing with a friend about a month back. Our friend, Scott, caught two fish, and the husband and I caught none! But Scott graciously gave the fish to us, and we got to kill and cook our first fresh fish! Yes, I was a bit squeamish at first, but my philosophy is, if you can’t kill your own food, you probably should not be eating it. So after a nice whack on the head, we gutted and beheaded the fish as quickly as our inexperienced hands could. Jake decided to fillet his, but I left mine whole. Sautéed it in some butter with some onions and garlic. Served with some Jasmine rice. Mmmm….that was good!

We have been fishing once since then, and didn’t catch anything. I guess that is ok, seeing as how we got a huge bag of tilapia from Aldi’s for dirt cheap (already killed, gutted, and filleted!). One of these nights, though, I want to catch a couple fish, gather a wild herb salad, and make an entire “foraged” meal.

Everybody is doing it. I guess I need to get in on this hot, cooking action. Since the husband has been laid off, I have been doing a LOT more cooking and experimenting. I have everything saved in a text file, but I want something better organized, and I think this is a good way to do it. And I get to share it with people!

I think I will also talk about my forays into frugal/green living. I love home remedies and foraging for wild foods, too. So, yeah.
